COPPA Compliance

Sensible is designed to be fully compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Here's how.

How Sensible meets COPPA requirements

Sensible does not collect data directly from children. All data collection is initiated by the parent:

  1. The parent creates an account
  2. The parent adds a child profile
  3. The parent installs the extension on the child's device
  4. The parent enters the link code to start monitoring

By linking a device to a child's profile, the parent consents to the collection of their child's AI conversations.

Direct notice to children

The Chrome extension provides clear, age-appropriate notice to children:

  • A visible indicator when monitoring is active
  • A popup explaining what's being monitored and why
  • A one-time welcome message on first link
  • Language written for ages 10-17

Parental rights

As a parent, COPPA gives you the right to:

  • Review your child's collected data (via the dashboard)
  • Delete your child's data (by removing their profile or contacting us)
  • Revoke consent (by unlinking devices or deleting the child's profile)
  • Refuse further collection (by uninstalling the extension)

Data minimization

Sensible only collects what's needed for the service:

  • AI conversation content (prompt and response)
  • Platform and timestamp
  • Device identification
  • Safety analysis results

We do not collect browsing history, location, contacts, or any other data.

Data security

All data is:

  • Encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS)
  • Encrypted at rest (database encryption)
  • Protected by row-level security policies
  • Subject to access controls and audit logging

Data retention

Conversations and alerts are automatically deleted after 90 days. Account data is deleted when you request it.

Who is the "user" under COPPA?

The parent is the user of Sensible, not the child. The parent creates the account, installs the extension, and views the dashboard. The child's data is collected under the parent's consent and control.
